The History & Theology of Byzantine Iconography

What is a Byzantine icon and why does the Orthodox Church consider iconography to be far more than religious art?

In this short introduction, we explore the history and theology of Byzantine iconography, from the earliest centuries of Christianity and the theology of the Incarnation to the Iconoclastic Controversy, the Seventh Ecumenical Council and the living tradition of iconography today.

As the story unfolds, you’ll watch the first stages in the writing of an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos (Mother of God), the same icon students will learn to write, step by step, in Writing the Divine: An Introduction to Byzantine Iconography.

This eight-week beginner course at the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne has been designed for those wishing to learn the traditional process of Byzantine icon painting from beginning to end. No previous iconography experience is required.

The course explores not only how an icon is written, but also why, introducing students to the history, theology, symbolism, materials and traditional techniques that have shaped Byzantine iconography for centuries.
